The Best Sunset Spots on the Emerald Coast

The Gulf faces south and west here, which makes the Panhandle one of Florida's great sunset coasts. Where to be when the sky goes coral.

The Best Sunset Spots on the Emerald Coast

One quiet advantage of the Florida Panhandle over the state’s more famous Atlantic side: the sun sets over the water here. Because this coastline faces generally south and west toward the open Gulf, you get unobstructed over-water sunsets β€” exactly the thing east-coast Florida beaches can’t offer, where the sun rises over the ocean and sets behind the mainland. Here’s where to catch it.

Okaloosa Island Pier

The pier in Fort Walton Beach reaches roughly 1,261 feet into the Gulf, putting you well past the surf line with a clean western horizon. It’s a small fee to walk out, and the elevated vantage over open water is hard to beat. Anglers fish the rails while the sky changes.

Pensacola Beach

Santa Rosa Island, where Pensacola Beach sits, is largely protected within Gulf Islands National Seashore β€” which means long stretches of undeveloped, dune-backed shoreline with nothing on the horizon but water. Drive west toward Fort Pickens and the crowds thin out completely.

Destin Harbor

For a different kind of golden hour, the harbor itself glows as the charter fleet comes in. You trade the open Gulf horizon for boat masts and waterfront energy β€” better if you want a drink in hand than a pure nature moment.

Timing It

Gulf sunsets here run late in summer β€” often after 7:30 PM local time in June and July. Arrive 20 minutes early; the best color frequently comes after the sun is technically down.
